From websites to smartphone apps to software development, UX design is an important aspect to just about any consumer-facing product on the market. As such, Hong Kong UX designers are in high demand across the city.
Despite being a vital component to the overall success of most projects, UX design is still a relatively new field, and as such, it remains greatly misunderstood in the C-Suite and in many human resource departments.
As an HR worker who has made a concerted effort to stay on top of emerging employment and technology trends, I have developed a system for evaluating applicants for UX design jobs.
To help with your job hunt, I have compiled a few of the things you can do to separate yourself from the pack as a skilled UX designer in Hong Kong.
Be Specific
Skilled interviewers often ask general questions…and rarely expect generic answers.
If I ask you to explain UX design or highlight your process, I am not really interested in hearing a dictionary definition or cookie-cutter response. I want to hear specific things related to your qualifications, skills, and abilities. For example, a good answer might include mentioning user empathy or highlight the specific research process you utilize to better connect with users.
Specificity is also key when highlighting your past experience and overall design process.
Keep Things Simple
This tip depends greatly on the team conducting your interview, but if you are dealing with people who do not have hands-on UX design experience, it is best to simplify your answers, while still incorporating specific details as outlined in the previous point.
Basically, you want to take your complex UX design process and explain it in a way that a technologically illiterate person could understand. Skip the buzzwords and industry jargon in favour of clarity.
Highlight Your Soft Skills
As a UX designer, you are typically going to be embedded within a creative team on your projects, making ‘culture fit’ a vital part of the role. One of the best ways to highlight your ability to mesh within a specific team is by showing off your soft skills, like communication and time management.
You want to tailor your answers to the specific company you are applying with. For example, an independent video game studio might be comfortable with a relaxed, casual interviewee, while an investment bank will likely favour professionalism.
The UX design job market in Hong Kong might be competitive, but it is also in high demand. Hopefully, these tips help you land your dream job on the first try, but even if they don’t, if you apply them consistently you are bound to get results.
